Many people are calling the Mission and wanting to offer help to the victims of the recent flooding disasters in the wake of Hurricane Irene. There are some wonderfully organized relief efforts now in place in Schenectady and Schoharie counties. If you would like to help, we have compiled a list of resources here to aid you in your giving.
Funds for relief efforts have been set up in two places:“Take Back Schoharie” Schoharie Reformed Church PO Box 745 Schoharie, NY 12157 (please write “Take Back Schoharie” in the memo line of your check. Checks can be made payable to Schoharie Reformed Church) Schoharie County Community Action Program 795 East Main St, Suite 5 Cobleskill, NY 12043 (please write Flood Relief Efforts in the memo line)
Please also check your local newspapers for other places that are accepting financial gifts towards flood relief.
There are different organizations helping people with their needs. Please contact the following organizations for more information on how to best help.
To donate the following needed items:
- Clothing, food & personal care items – contact Schoharie County Community Action Program at 234-2568
- Furniture & Household items – contact Catholic Charities of Schoharie County at 234-3581
- Pet food & supplies – contact Howes Cave Animal Shelter at 231-2718 (ask for Ann MacCuish)
To volunteer your time to the clean-up efforts please call Sarah Goodrich at (518) 470-0014 or other volunteer coordinators at (518) 390-8826 or (518) 390-2811. It is critical that you contact a volunteer coordinator before arriving to help.
City Mission is also a drop-off site for donations. Please identify your items as being for flood relief as we are working with the agencies that are serving the flood victims. We are also sending work crews on a weekly basis to help with the clean-up.
