Volunteering at City Mission

Volunteers are vital and valuable partners at City Mission. In 2012, volunteers donated over 33,000 hours of time serving others at the Mission.

There are many volunteer opportunities listed on the following pages. If you are interested in volunteering, please click on one of the links to find out how. New volunteer opportunities are always available, and we love to hear your ideas as well. Individual Volunteers

Individuals can volunteer on a one time or ongoing basis.  Ongoing opportunities include: tutoring, mentoring, driving for pick ups or appointments, and assisting in the clothing room.  For ongoing opportunities, please print out and return a Volunteer Application Form or contact Nicole Amedore, Volunteer Coordinator, at 346-2275 ext. 311. 

One time or seasonal opportunities include:

  • Kitchen prep/serving
  • Holiday meal server
  • Christmas toy store assistant
  • Distribution Center/Donation Sorting
  • Summer Youth Adventure Counselor

Service Learning

City Mission provides volunteer projects for students needing to complete volunteer hours for school classes and honor societies.  Students can choose individual or group projects listed here, or students can offer project ideas. Groups

Volunteer opportunities for groups include:

Ongoing:  (call or fill out Volunteer Project Interest Form for times and availability)

  • Serve a Community Meal - Volunteers needed: 8-10  Location: Wallace Campbell Dining Center  512 Smith Street, Schenectady -- Call for times and availability
  • Service Project - Different needs each week!  Some include: making food bags for our community, cleaning our dining center, and outdoor projects
  • Distribution Center - located in Rotterdam – help sort donated items
  • Donation Drives - Groups collect much-needed items off-site and bring to City Mission

Types of drives include:

  • Personal care items for men, women, and children
  • Diapers and wipes for babies staying at the Family Life Center
  • Clothing
  • School supplies
  • Winter clothing items
  • New, unwrapped children’s toys for Christmas toy store
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Small household appliances

Seasonal:

  • Landscaping, shoveling, raking, gardening

Corporate Partnerships

City Mission offers team building projects and meeting facilities in downtown Schenectady.  Meeting facilities include:

  • Small meeting room for up to 40 people
  • Large meeting room for up to 120 people
  • Media screen/DVD player and sound systems in both rooms

Team building projects vary based on the needs of the Mission and goals of the team.
