Lance's Story
Spring is a season of renewal — a reminder that growth often happens slowly, one day at a time. With your help, this spring represents steady progress, growing faith, and the beginning of a healthier rhythm of life for Lance.
“When I arrived, it was scary, especially with the trust issues that I had. But the staff took those away,” Lance recalls.
From the very first moments, he felt welcomed and supported. “They’ve never once steered me wrong. It’s amazing,” he says. The care and encouragement he received from staff and caring people like you made him feel safe and part of a community. That sense of trust gave him the foundation to begin opening up, believing he could rely on others and start rebuilding his life.
In his time in the Bridges to Freedom Program, Lance has been involved in Mission Works, giving back in both the Dining Center and the Thrift Store. “I can pay it forward give what was given to me to someone else,” he explains. For him, giving back isn’t just about completing tasks—it’s about being part of a cycle of care that has shaped his own journey. Watching new people join the program, he remembers his own first days and feels inspired to encourage them.
“I see new people coming in, and I’ve actually stepped back a bit so they can thrive and get their chance to shine,” he says.
The changes Lance has experienced go beyond tasks and responsibilities.
“I’ve got God back in my life. I’m more steady, more stable,” he shares. “I’ve learned how to laugh again. I got my sense of humor back. I haven’t truly been happy in years.”
Faith has become a guiding force for him, and he’s beginning to feel a sense of hope and purpose that was missing before.
For Lance, every moment at City Mission is a chance to grow, give back, and experience the encouragement that has helped him rebuild. “People, even perfect strangers, have helped me. It’s amazing to see God working in my life,” he says. His journey is still unfolding, but the confidence, faith, and gratitude he’s gained are already making a difference.
Stories like Lance’s are made possible because of friends like you. He has a heartfelt message for those who support City Mission:
“Thank you for loving people you don’t even know. It gives me faith and hope in humanity. You’re proof that good people exist.”
